My aim with the composition of this painting was to achieve a separation of the foreground elements (Mirror frame and splashed blood) from the image of the Medusa seen in the mirror by using various different depth cues. First the haze and cracks in the mirror then the soft focus and shadow of the talons, but mostly a shift in the colours: The image seen in the mirror is in slightly cooler, bluer tones which make it seem further away from the viewer.
